Cambodia is Prepared to Show its Achievements in the Disability Sector to the World

PHNOM PENH: The Secretary of State of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation and Secretary-General of the Disability Action Council, Em Chan Makara, has said that Cambodia has achieved a lot regarding the protection of persons with disabilities and is, therefore, proud to show its achievements in this field to the world.

Speaking at a press conference on the organization of the 5th Asia-Pacific Community-Based Inclusive Development (AP-CBID) Congress to be hosted in Cambodia, Secretary of State Em Chan Makara said that Cambodia has made many achievements in the disability sector, including the organization of legal support, the building of infrastructure and accessible designs that accommodate persons with disabilities, the assistance provided to persons with disabilities during and after the major Covid-19 outbreak, the establishment of special education schools, and the promotion of arts and sports participation by persons with disabilities.

“In organizing this 5th International Congress, our country is very proud to present [our progress] to the countries that will be participating in this forum because we have achieved a lot since introducing the law on the protection and promotion of persons with disabilities, which has been implemented from 2009 to 2023," he said.

The Secretary-General of the Disability Action Council also added that there are currently about 870,000 persons with disabilities in Cambodia.

The Kingdom will host the 5th AP-CBID Congress from 15-17 March 2023. The opening ceremony will be presided over by Prime Minister Hun Sen and attended by around 700 national and international guests.

Secretary of State for the Ministry of Social Affairs, Sem Sokha, has stated that it is an honor to have Cambodia chosen to host this major international congress under the common theme of "strengthening social resilience and the economy of persons with disabilities, during and after the Covid-19 outbreak, through Community-Based Environmental Development (CBID)”. He added that the congress will focus on strengthening cooperation and partnerships, and promoting social welfare and support for persons with disabilities, while simultaneously promoting non-discriminatory participation for persons with disabilities and good practice in CBID programs, during and after the Covid-19 outbreak.

In addition to hosting the congress, Cambodia will also arrange for national and foreign delegations to directly monitor the development of infrastructure for persons with disabilities in Phnom Penh, as well as organize a visit to the Win-Win Monument and Morodok Techo National Stadium, where the ASEAN Para Games will open and be held.

Secretary of State Em Chan Makara has stated that bringing a delegation to visit these areas will not only show the progress Cambodia has made in the protection of persons with disabilities, but will also help to promote Cambodia to the world.

The Minister of Social Affairs, Vong Sauth, has said that he expects the 5th AP-CBID congress will contribute to the promotion of the dignity and rights of persons with disabilities, and will also help create opportunities for more communication between persons with disabilities in Cambodia and persons with disabilities abroad.
